‘You heard me crying. I burned in front of you,you stayed quiet.I have been trying, trying so hard not to feel miserable for once and wonder what possible thing in this world I could have done so wrong! The more I think, the more I drown. And till this day,my wounds are still sour with just the mere thought of you.I’ve not been able to soften the hardness you’ve left behind.’’
Acid attacks. One of the most heinous crimes against women.with increase in the number of rapes, dowry and cases of violence against women, acid attacks have also been increasing ever since.
Statistics says that year 2014 saw a never before 309 acid attacks incidents being reported from India, almost 300% more than such cases in the preceding three years. Again with the statistics by the National Crimes Record Bureau,Uttar Pradesh (state in India) topped the list with more than 300 cases till Nov,2016.
The major reasons cited included attacks as a punishment, revenge or over personal enmity.Even husbands used acid on wives. Most survivors experience a traumatic change in their lifestyle and face social isolation. These victims have to go through serious physical and psychological changes which disrupts the whole idea of humanity.
Today, this blog is about the story of a girl,a woman who is an acid attack victim and the survivor.
(these pictures and story is a work of fiction)
I am xyz. What’s in the name, right? I am an acid attack survivor.Yes,I survived the inhumane crime. The pictures below illustrates the series of events the victims generally go through!
But I will fight. I will fight till my last breath. Winning is not confirmed but I wouldn’t let myself fail. Do you also believe that every life is worth the effort? I do.
I am Laxmi(founder,Stop Acid Attack), I am Monica Singh(Activist,New york) . I am Arti,I am Sonali Mukherjee.
I am the voice, the voice for all the women who have to go through such heinous crimes.
In recent years many activists have come forward and addressed the issue and the need to end acid attacks as it destroys the whole life of the victim. Alok dixit’s and Laxmi’s incredible work towards rehabilitation of these victims like opening of Sheroes (cafe in agra) is commendable.
Fashion industry also broke the unconventional standards of beauty by being a great platform for Laxmi (an acid attack survivor) who embraced the spirit of ‘I am more than my scar’ at NYFW. These women are coming forward, stepping up and bridging the gaps, accepting who they are and are the bosses and inspiration for the world.
Today my newsfeed is flooded with the unfortunate incident where a 21 year old aspiring model Resham Khan and her cousin were burnt with acid. On account of this and others, I want to reach out to all of you out there. Let us all stand together and fight against the mindset towards such victims. Let us look at them with kindness in our hearts and smiles on our faces. After all, beauty lies in acceptance, the acceptance of flaws. #flowersnotscars #endacidattacks
